6 Winter Break Family Vacation Ideas Even College Students Will Enjoy

By Christine Ascher on December 5, 2017

Often when you’re in the midst of finals, studying and stressing, the only thing that can keep you sane is the promise of what’s to come: winter break. In addition to the vacation from school, it’s always nice to take an actual vacation—one that will allow you to relax and take your mind off of school, work and whatever else usually takes up your day-to-day routine. Unfortunately, once you’re in college, family vacations can sometimes get a bit boring, given that you may not be interested in the same activities as your parents or younger siblings. If you’re looking for a trip that both you and the rest of your family will enjoy, consider some of the following vacation ideas.

1. New York City

While you will have to brave the cold weather, a trip to the vibrant city of New York will be sure to have something for family members of all ages. Whether it’s ice skating at Rockefeller Center, shopping on Fifth Avenue, strolling through Central Park, or seeing a play on Broadway, there’s plenty to keep everyone busy—and to get you into the holiday spirit. Plus, there will also be enough nightlife for you to enjoy even if some other family members want to spend the night in. You can also spend time taking in some of the culture that the city has to offer; for instance, by visiting the Guggenheim or the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

2. Disney World

You may think that Disney World is just for little kids; however, no matter how old you get, Disney World always remains a great place for a family vacation. As a college student, you can get even more out of the Disney experience that you would have when you were younger—for instance, you’ll have the chance to check out the scarier rides that you used to be afraid of.  You can also have fun sampling different regional restaurants at Epcot or checking out the wildlife at Animal Kingdom if you’re not into the rides. For even more entertainment, check out the events offered at Universal Orlando or immerse yourself in a world of magic at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. A Disney vacation will also have the added bonus of the warm Florida weather, which will help you break up an otherwise long, cold winter.

3. A Skiing Trip

If you’re up for a more adventurous vacation—and one that takes full advantage of the snow—skiing is a great way to go. No matter what level you or your family members are, you’ll all be able to participate. Websites like On the Snow will help you find a ski resort in a variety of states around the U.S., and will give you relevant information concerning the terrain, visitor ratings, and the best time of year to visit. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned skier, you’ll be able to get in some fun exercise and the thrill that comes with the sport on your winter vacation.

4. European Vacation

If you’re going on a more extended vacation, there are countless options in Europe. Wherever you’re visiting, you’ll be able to turn the vacation into a learning experience by exploring the historical side of the city, visiting ancient castles, and learning more about the local culture. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities for fun; between shopping, going to the theater, checking out local restaurants, and experiencing the nightlife that European cities have to offer, you’ll always be busy. If you want to stick to an English-speaking country, try the UK: whether you and your family decide to stay in one place or travel around, you’ll learn a lot about a new culture and have fun while doing it.

5. A Trip to the Beach

If you live in a cold area of the country, you and your family may all appreciate a break from the winter weather with a waterfront vacation. Head south for a chance to lounge on the beach, relaxing and recuperating from the stress of finals. Spend time with your family on the beach and exploring a local beach town, and when you get tired of your R & R, try some water sports for more entertainment. Learn how to jet-ski, or rent some kayaks with the rest of your family. With the sunshine and ocean air, everyone will leave feeling refreshed and re-energized enough to get back into their normal routines.

6. Camping

For a vacation that can be either relaxing or exciting—or both—depending on what you’re up for, consider a camping trip at a national park such as Yosemite. Take some easy-going hikes or challenge yourself to more difficult ones, try out rock climbing, or relax at the spa. If a tent isn’t quite your thing, you can also book a cabin for you and your family or even stay at a hotel near the park for a more comfortable experience. You’ll be able to get in touch with nature and forget about the stresses of school in the meantime.
