5 Reasons Living with a Friend is a Bad Call

By Kylie Exline on January 27, 2016

Living with roommates is no easy task. You not only see them about 24/7, but you have to learn to deal with their many, many flaws. Throw in those roommates already being your friends, and it becomes even more difficult. Below are five reasons as to why  living with a friend is a very bad idea. P.S. I apologize if you have previously or most recently made this mistake.

1. Have High Expectations

You go into living with friends with anything but negative thoughts. You obviously think you know them, are used to their tendencies, and know they’ll just be a great roomie. What you do not yet know however, is that they never clean up after using the stove, repeatedly leave their dirty clothes in your shared bathroom, and tend to forget to turn off the T.V. when they leave for class.  But no biggie, right? Wrong.

2. Unable to Vent

When you were simply friends, you were able to complain about your then roommates at the time. If you whine about them now, then well, let’s just say that that would be a very awkward situation to try and abort.  You have to vent to someone so you end up calling mom and get an earful on how she warned you about this. “Mothers always know best” starts to ring some truth, but you’ll never tell her that.

3. Prepare for the Best, Not Worst

Slightly identical to number one, you tend to not expect worst case scenario when it comes to your friends. It’s much like dating someone when you just know it is absolutely never going to work out. But you brace yourself for rainbows and butterfly’s because it can be fun to play naïve at times. Just keep in mind that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

4. Forced to Tip-Toe

You may be a straight forward person, confront someone when there is an issue, and expect others to reciprocate. However, that is most likely not always the case. If anything, you’ll have to drag out their perspective, convince them to share their emotions, and remember to not always say what is on your mind. If you are not being used to thinking before you speak, learn now. It’ll do you well.

Tip-toeing.

5. Potentially End the Friendship

By the end of the lease, it may also be the end of what once was friendship. You went from enjoying most of the time you spent together, to praying they’re not home when you get back from the gym. It is as if you fell out of love, and the bond you shared six short months ago has left with no intention of returning. Good thing you have that tub of Ben and Jerry’s hidden behind the ice box.

Having friends as roommates can be great, but can also be just as sucky. You learn that compromise is the magic word, and to pick your battles. Flaws are quickly acknowledged, messiness is apparent, and you instantly decide that you do not want to have to deal with every little foible. To end on a semi good note, just remember that with randoms, you’re not risking anything.
